The Edge is a unique new coastal activities centre in Whitehaven, aimed at boosting the local economy, attracting visitors and providing a valuable resource for the community.

Located on the site of the old Wellington Inn, on the town’s historic harbour, the £5m three-storey building offers a stunning blend of coastal charm and modern design.

Inside are 16 en-suite bedrooms, all with harbour views, a vibrant café and flexible-use mezzanine area, publicly accessible toilets, a bookable meeting room, group changing facilities, and a small stage, ideal for acoustic performances.

On-site parking is provided, subject to availability. There is also a new slipway that was built as part of the project and plenty of outdoor space around the area for lots more fun!

The Edge is owned by Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, a Statutory Harbour Authority and Trust Port.

Designed by Manchester-based architectural practice Northmill Associates to look like a piece of sandstone washed up on the harbour in high seas, it was built by Flimby-based Thomas Armstrong Construction Ltd and completed in October 2025.

To help bring it to life, local hospitality specialists Osprey Management Group – known for a portfolio of quality establishments – stepped up with energy, expertise and entrepreneurial spirit to steer the building’s commercial operation.

The Edge has already won awards for its design and hopefully there are more to come!

The new facility supports visitors and locals enjoying the Cumbrian coastline through walking, cycling, watersports and other outdoor pursuits, as well as a range of cultural and wellbeing activities, from music to painting, from messy play to yoga.

Through events organised by specialist groups and organisations, it is fast becoming a place for people to have fun, relax, meet friends, learn new skills, unleash their creative spirit, and more...!

Its accommodation entices people from all walks of life to stay while they explore the area; from walkers and those beginning the popular Coast to Coast cycle route to artists using the landscape as inspiration, and from contractors working locally to families of all ages who visit the area for a holiday.

In addition, ideas are being developed with groups such as schools, universities and others who may wish to organise residentials.

Funded by Sellafield Ltd's Social Impact Multiplied - SiX programme and the Government's former Coastal Communities Fund, The Edge sits proudly alongside other projects in Whitehaven, such as the redevelopment of the Old New Quay, the launch of The Bus Station business and hospitality centre, and the transformation of the Grade II listed former Whittles building into a digital and gaming hub called LEVELS.

These have together helped to create jobs, attract new people, encourage locals to stay in the area and drive tourists to West Cumbria from the central Lake District.

The Edge itself has already boosted employment figures, along with opportunities for local businesses to support catering and hospitality, and for organisations to co-ordinate a variety of activities and events.

It is regularly used by diverse groups, many of whom proudly call it their second home and declare they want to move in permanently!

The aim is to build a financially sustainable centre with long-term social, economic and health benefits.
