Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners (WHC) put all revenues generated into the upkeep and maintenance of Whitehaven Harbour and Marina, along with any projects to enhance and promote the area. The Commissioners are committed to the betterment of the Harbour for the enjoyment of people in the town, along the coast, across Cumbria and the UK and for tourists across the world.

Whitehaven Harbour is governed by WHC who by virtue of the Whitehaven Town and Harbour Incorporation Act 1708 are a Statutory Harbour Authority and Trust Port, a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal. Trust Ports are independent statutory bodies established to operate ports for the benefit of all stakeholders rather than private investors.

This means:
  • There are no shareholders
  • Profits are not distributed
  • Financial surpluses are reinvested into the harbour
  • Decisions are made for the long-term benefit of harbour users and the community
  • Investment supports economic growth, employment and environmental sustainability.

This structure helps provide confidence that any trading income or funding generates lasting public benefit.

Every pound invested helps to strengthen Whitehaven Harbour for future generations while supporting the wider regional economy.
