Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners are delighted to announce an impressive tall ship, Nao Santa Maria, will visit the harbour this summer, arriving on 31st July for a 10-day stay.

Following the success of last year’s visit of the tall ship Galéon Andalucia, this year’s event promises to be even more memorable, offering residents and visitors a unique opportunity to experience a striking replica of one of history’s most famous ships.

The Nao Santa Maria, a faithful reconstruction of Christopher Columbus’s flagship, is renowned for its craftsmanship and historical significance, attracting thousands of visitors at ports across Europe.

Deanne Shallcross, CEO of Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, said: "We look forward to welcoming another tall ship to our historic harbour. The Galéon Andalucia last summer attracted thousands of visitors, many of whom hadn't been to Whitehaven for a long time, if at all, and we spoke to lots who commented on the friendly community and stunning location. Of course, we hope they'll all return!

"One of the highlights for us included seeing families with children in costume as they went on board to learn about the history of impressive ships like the Andalucia, which of course would have been a common sight in Whitehaven 300 or 400 years ago. Experiences like this really help to bring history to life for people. Well done to all involved in this exciting visit."

The Harbour Commissioners are grateful to Whitehaven Town Council and Gerard Richardson for helping to secure the visit and to the following companies whose support is vital to ensure it goes ahead: Sellafield Ltd, Amentum Global, Cavendish Nuclear, Jennings/Delkia and Whitehaven Marina/Marina Projects.

Whitehaven Harbour continues to build its reputation as a vibrant destination for maritime heritage and tourism, and the return of a tall ship of this caliber highlights the harbour’s growing appeal.

Further announcements, including event details and visitor information, will be released in the coming weeks.

Organisers are currently seeking media sponsors, as well as sponsors to support coach transport from Keswick and Cockermouth. For more details, please contact gerard@richardsonsoffice.net
